The community of Ottumwa is the Seat for Wapello County.

Wapello County was founded February 17, 1843.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Wapello had a population of 35,151 people. This is a decrease of 1.33% since the last Census (which gave a population of 35,625 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Wapello represented 1.17% of the total population of Iowa.

While it makes interesting reading all by itself, it should be of special interest to genealogists and family historians looking for people who were either affected by or directly involved in such tragedies.
