Pocahontas County was founded January 15, 1851. Pocahontas was created by taking area from Greene and Humboldt Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Pocahontas had a population of 6,619 people. This is a decrease of 9.19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,289 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Pocahontas represented 0.24% of the total population of Iowa.
