Murray County was founded in 1832 and was created by taking area from CherokeeCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Murray had a population of 40,621 people. This is an increase of 11.27% since the last Census (which gave a population of 36,506 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Murray represented 0.45% of the total population of Georgia, making it the state's 49th most populous county (out of 159 counties).
