The community of Sparta is the Seat for Hancock County.

Hancock County was founded in 1793. Hancock was created by taking area from Greene and Washington Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Hancock had a population of 8,475 people. This is a decrease of 10.12% since the last Census (which gave a population of 9,429 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hancock represented 0.1% of the total population of Georgia.
