Dawson County was founded in 1857. Dawson was created by taking area from Gilmer and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Dawson had a population of 22,555 people. This is an increase of 40.98% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,999 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Dawson represented 0.2% of the total population of Georgia, making it the state's 95th most populous county (out of 159 counties).
