Welcome to Iola ...

So far, we found very little information about Iola. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

Iola would have been located within present day Gunnison County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Iola, you might consider that their post office opened in 1896. The community was inundated by the Blue Mesa Reservoir in 1965.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Iola is 7,520 feet [2,292 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the altitude of Iola is about 1½ mile [or ~2¼ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: The area where Iola was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

We originally found mention of Iola in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found (so far) for Iola was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Iola post office opened in 1896. The Iola post office closed in 1963.

However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now.
