Rio Grande County was founded February 10, 1874. Rio Grande was created by taking area from Costilla and Conejos Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Rio Grande had a population of 11,277 people. This is a decrease of 5.88% since the last Census (which gave a population of 11,982 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Rio Grande represented 0.24% of the total population of Colorado.
