Rio Blanco County was founded March 25, 1889 and was created by taking area from GarfieldCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Rio Blanco had a population of 6,534 people. This is an increase of 9.15% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,986 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Rio Blanco represented 0.14% of the total population of Colorado, making it the state's 46th most populous county (out of 64 counties).
