Chaffee County was founded February 10, 1879 and was created by taking area from  County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Chaffee had a population of 20,356 people. This is an increase of 14.31% since the last Census (which gave a population of 17,808 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Chaffee represented 0.35% of the total population of Colorado.
