Welcome to Calcite ...So far, we found very little information about Calcite. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1> We've added Calcite to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. While we don't have a date for the founding of Calcite, you might consider that their post office opened in 1904. From Place Names in Colorado,<3> the origin of Calcite is described as "Named for the Calcite (lime) quarry located nearby." While the community is gone, the present day location for Calcite is 7,600 feet [2,316 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Calcite is about 1½ mile [or ~2¼ km] above sea level.
