The community of Madera is the Seat for Madera County.

Madera County was founded in 1893 and was created by taking area from FresnoCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Madera had a population of 148,632 people. This is an increase of 20.73% since the last Census (which gave a population of 123,109 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Madera represented 0.36% of the total population of California, making it the state's 35th most populous county (out of 58 counties).
