The origin (or the toponymy) of Barkerville: Named after William 'Billy' Barker (1820-1894), a miner whose discovery of gold at Williams Creek led to the Cariboo Gold Rush. While the community is gone, the present day location for Barkerville is 4,880 feet [1,487 m] above sea level.<2> In other words, the altitude of Barkerville is about 1 mile [or ~1½ km] above sea level.
