Prairie County was founded in 1846. Prairie was created by taking area from Arkansas and Pulaski Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Prairie had a population of 8,093 people. This is a decrease of 7.14% since the last Census (which gave a population of 8,715 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Prairie represented 0.3% of the total population of Arkansas.
