Foreword

Alexander Molyneaux was born on the 17-th of March, in the year 1858. In the townland of Ballgowan. In the county of Down Ireland, on a small farm. One of Lord Earls Kilmorey estates, known as the barrentry of Moran.

The house was built of stone and slate.

The beautiful sheet of water, called Carlingford Lough flowed within one furlong of the house at high tide. And in the Lough, ships from all parts of the world, at times running for shelter when the wind was not favorable.

The Lough is twenty miles long and at low tide there are parts of the channel not more than two hundred feet wide. But there is a hundred feet of water at low tide, and it widens to three miles towards a town called Newary, and affords anchorage for thousands of ships, from all nations.
