The Commemorative Quarter for Alabama

Welcome to Larissa ...

So far, we found very little information about Larissa. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Larissa to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Larissa - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Larissa, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Larissa , we believe that it would have been located within present day Winston County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Larissa, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1857.

Time Zone: The area where Larissa was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

Communities Also Named Larissa ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 3 communities that are also named Larissa - they are located in Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Larissa.

Adding Larissa to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Larissa was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Larissa post office opened in 1857.

We also found Larissa in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Larissa, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Alabama's counties, including Winston, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
