Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Athens had an population of 27,400 people. This is an increase of 25.13% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 44.46% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Athens had a population of 21,897 people (or 26.45% of the total population of Limestone County). This makes Athens the county's most populous community.

The population of Athens represents 0.46% of the population of Alabama (which has 4,779,736 people), making it the state's 24th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 21,897 people, the population of Athens increased 15.45% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 18,967 people).
