Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Sonora had an population of 2,793 people. This is a decrease of 7.73% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 4.48% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sonora had a population of 3,027 people (or 73.33% of the total population of Sutton County). This makes Sonora the county's most populous community.

The population of Sonora represents 0.01% of the population of Texas (which has 25,145,561 people), making it the state's 457th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 3,027 people, the population of Sonora increased 3.52% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 2,924 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sonora was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Sonora post office opened in 1889.

We also found Sonora in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
