The origin (or the toponymy) of Dalhart: The name Dalhart is a portmanteau<2> and it reflects the fact that the city lies on the border between Dallam and Hartley counties.

We originally found mention of Dalhart in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Dalhart was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Dalhart post office opened in 1901.

We also found Dalhart on a map titled Shell Oil Road Map for Oklahoma (1948).
