While we don't have a date for the founding of Columbus, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1891.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Columbus has a population of 1,611 people<3> (see below for details).

Columbus is 4,050 feet [1,234 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Columbus is about ¾ mile [or ~1¼ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: Columbus lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Columbus is located in the (575) area code.

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Columbus had an population of 1,611 people. This is a decrease of 3.19% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 8.73% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Columbus had a population of 1,664 people (which is 6.63% of the total population of Luna County). This makes Columbus the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Columbus represents 0.08% of the population of New Mexico (which has 2,059,179 people), making it the state's 50th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,664 people, the population of Columbus decreased 5.72% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,765 people).

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two New Mexico communities named Columbus: This one is located in Luna County and the other is located in Taos County.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Columbus was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Columbus post office opened in 1891.
