So far, we have found very little information about Hibbs Hole.<1>

The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<2>

We've added Hibbs Hole to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Hibbs Hole, please Contact Us.

How Far From Hibbs Hole to ...

We spend a lot of time looking through Gazetteers, Almanacs & Directories that were published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many of the Gazetteers include the distance from a community such as Hibbs Hole to various places of note, such as Parliament Hill.

With a nod to our favorite Gazetteers and using the location of where the historic community of Hibbs Hole once stood, the straight-line distance<3> beginning in Hibbs Hole to:

  • Saint John's [Map], which is the Provincial Capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, lies 24 miles [38.6 km] to the East (E). If you could walk a straight line from Hibbs Hole to Saint John's, with an average speed<4> of 2.2 miles [3.5 km] per hour, it would take just about two full days to make the trip. A horse and buggy averaging 3.2 miles [5.1 km] per hour would take most of a day.
  • The National Capital at Parliament Hill (Ottawa, ON [Map]) is 1,076 miles [1,731.7 km] to the West (W).
  • The shortest distance<5> to Jerusalem (specifically the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock [Map]) is 4,566 miles [7,348.3 km] and it lies to the East Northeast (ENE).<6>
  • The distance to the Great Mosque of Mecca (specifically the Ka'bah - or Kaaba [Map]) is 5,268 miles [8,478 km] and it lies to the East Northeast (ENE).<7>
  • The distance to Saint Peter's Basilica (The Vatican [Map]) is 3,145 miles [5,061.4 km] and it lies to the East Northeast (ENE).<8>

Footnotes ...

<1>If we encounter the name of what might be a community, our methodology is to add that name to our Gazetteer. For example, we might find a sentence like "He went north past Hibbs Hole and then turned west". While Hibbs Hole could be some kind of landmark, we think that it's more likely to be a community. We've added Hibbs Hole as a placeholder with the hope that we'll be able to add more information in the future.

Just as a reminder: Our definition of a community is rather broad and includes those places where several families lived and had a name which identified that place. The community might still exist or it might have existed for just a short period of time. Places of interest include buildings at a crossroad, families in a hollow or maybe the location of a way station. It also includes places like mines, lumber camps, ferry crossings, etc.

Also keep in mind that Hibbs Hole could have been on the original document by mistake, misspelled, the original/alternate name of a community that we've listed elsewhere or was placed in the wrong . Sometimes a post office or train station would have a different name than the community where it's located, so two names might be referring to the same community.

<2>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Hibbs Hole, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.

- Return to Citation

<3>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance that begins in Hibbs Hole. A straight line distance ignores obstructions like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line from Point A (ie- Hibbs Hole) to Point B.

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Hibbs Hole. The point that we are using is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 47.6000, Longitude: -53.1833     [Map].

- Return to Citation

<4>While we have tried to pick reasonable speeds, the rate of travel is very theoretical - obstacles like fences, hills, lakes, river crossings and rest stops have been ignored. When we say 'Days' of travel, we're assuming 8 hours of travel per day.

- Return to Citation

<5>The shortest line can be visualized by stretching a string on a Globe from Point A to Point B - this is known as a Great Circle Route. Where you might expect the shortest route from Hibbs Hole to the Middle East to be East and South, the Great Circle Route actually lies to the North and East.

- Return to Citation

<6>The calculated bearing (or the angle) to Jerusalem is 291.678 degrees.

- Return to Citation

<7>The calculated bearing (or the angle) to Mecca is 286.896 degrees.

- Return to Citation

<8>The calculated bearing (or the angle) to the Vatican is 288.253 degrees.
