At the time of the 2010 Census, Ellendale had a population of 1,394 people (or 26.36% of the total population of Dickey County). This makes Ellendale the county's 2nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,394 people, the population of Ellendale decreased 10.58% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 1,559 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Ellendale was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Ellendale post office opened in 1882.

We also found Ellendale on a map titled Rand McNally Map of North Dakota (1897).
