Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Sanford had an population of 30,074 people. This is an increase of 7.05% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 29.52% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sanford had a population of 28,094 people (which is 48.55% of the total population of Lee County). This makes Sanford the county's most populous community.

The population of Sanford represents 0.29% of the population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 31st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 28,094 people, the population of Sanford increased 20.99% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 23,220 people).

We originally found mention of Sanford in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sanford was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Sanford post office opened in 1872.

We also found Sanford on a map titled Rand McNally Map of North Carolina (1911).
