Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Shelby had an population of 1,953 people. This is a decrease of 12.38% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 33.25% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Shelby had a population of 2,229 people (or 6.53% of the total population of Bolivar County). This makes Shelby the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Shelby represents 0.08% of the population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's 95th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 2,229 people, the population of Shelby decreased 23.82% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 2,926 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Shelby was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Shelby post office opened in 1893.

We also found Shelby in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
