At the time of the 2010 Census, Sturgis had a population of 10,994 people (or 17.94% of the total population of Saint Joseph County). This makes Sturgis the county's most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sturgis was on a map titled Road Map for Michigan (from Shell Oil, 1956).

We also found Sturgis in the book titled .<7> From that list, the Sturgis post office opened in 1845.
