The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Richards ...

So far, we found very little information about Richards. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Richards to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Richards - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Richards, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Richards <3>, we believe that it would have been located within present day Barber County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Richards, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1883.

If Richards still existed, it would have been in the (620) area code.

Communities Also Named Richards ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two Kansas communities named Richards: This one is located in Barber County and the other is located in Chase County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 11 communities that are also named Richards - they are located in Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Richards.

Adding Richards to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Richards was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Richards post office opened in 1883.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Richards, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Barber, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>It's a common practice for mapmakers to remove the apostrophe from possessive names. So Richards may originally have been Richard's.. For more information, please visit our Genealogy Helper Page for Richards.
