The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Prospect ...

So far, we found very little information about Prospect. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Prospect to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Prospect - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Prospect, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Prospect , we believe that it would have been located within present day Republic County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Prospect, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1878.

Time Zone: The area where Prospect was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

Prospect would have been located in the (785) area code.

Communities Also Named Prospect ...

While we believe that this Prospect is located in Republic County, we know of another 2 Kansas communities named Prospect. Those communities are located in the following counties: Butler and Sedgwick County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 51 communities that are also named Prospect - they are located in Alabama (2), Colorado (2), Connecticut, Florida, Georgia (2), Illinois (2), Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana (2), Maine, Maryland, Mississippi (2), Missouri (2), Nevada, New Jersey, New York (2), North Carolina (2), Nova Scotia (2), Ohio (2), Ontario (4), Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee (8), Texas (3), Virginia and Wisconsin.

Adding Prospect to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Prospect was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Prospect post office opened in 1878.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Prospect, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Republic, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
