The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Hackberry ...

So far, we found very little information about Hackberry. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Hackberry to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Hackberry - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Hackberry, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Hackberry , we believe that it would have been located within present day Gove County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Hackberry, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1881.

Time Zone: The area where Hackberry was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Hackberry still existed, it would have been in the (785) area code.

The community of Hackberry was previously named Hackberry Mills.

Communities Also Named Hackberry ...

While we believe that this Hackberry is located in Gove County, we know of another 2 Kansas communities named Hackberry. Those communities are located in the following counties: Labette and Republic County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 12 communities that are also named Hackberry - they are located in Arizona, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas (7).

Adding Hackberry to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Hackberry was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Hackberry post office opened in 1881.

We also found Hackberry in the book titled Kansas Post Offices (May 29, 1828 - August 3, 1961).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Hackberry, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Gove, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
