The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Groton ...

So far, we found very little information about Groton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Groton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Groton - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Groton, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Groton , we believe that it would have been located within present day Logan County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Groton, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1878.

The location where Groton once stood is in the (785) area code.

Communities Also Named Groton ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two Kansas communities named Groton: This one is located in Logan County and the other is located in Wallace County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 9 communities that are also named Groton - they are located in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio (2), South Dakota and Vermont.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Groton.

Adding Groton to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Groton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Groton post office opened in 1878.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Groton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Logan, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
