The Commemorative Quarter for Kansas

Welcome to Dresden ...

So far, we found very little information about Dresden. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Dresden to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Dresden - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Dresden, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Dresden , we believe that it would have been located within present day Smith County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Dresden, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1871.

If Dresden still existed, it would have been in the (785) area code.

Communities Also Named Dresden ...

While we believe that this Dresden is located in Smith County, we know of another 2 Kansas communities named Dresden. Those communities are located in the following counties: Decatur and Kingman County.

Beyond Kansas, there are 19 communities that are also named Dresden - they are located in Georgia, Indiana, Iowa (2), Maine (2), Missouri (2), New York (2), North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Ontario, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Adding Dresden to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Dresden was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Dresden post office opened in 1871.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Dresden, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Kansas' counties, including Smith, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
