Several communities named Delavan share the same reason for their choice of Delavan. We're speculating that it might apply here: Named for E.C.#&160;Delavan, a temperance advocate of Albany, New York.

We originally found mention of Delavan in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Delavan was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Delavan post office opened in 1886.

We also found Delavan in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
