Welcome to Idlewild ...

So far, we found very little information about Idlewild. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Idlewild to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Idlewild - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Idlewild, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Idlewild , we believe that it would have been located within present day Harrison County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Idlewild, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1881.

Time Zone: The area where Idlewild was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Idlewild would have been located in the (812) area code.

Adding Idlewild to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Idlewild in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Idlewild was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Idlewild post office opened in 1881.

We also found Idlewild in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Idlewild, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Indiana's counties, including Harrison, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
