At the time of the 2010 Census, Chatham had a population of 11,500 people (which is 5.82% of the total population of Sangamon County). This makes Chatham the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Chatham represents 0.09% of the total population of Illinois (which has 12,830,632 people), making it the state's 202nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 11,500 people, the population of Chatham increased 33.99% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 8,583 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Chatham was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Chatham post office opened in 1841.
