Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Punta Gorda had an population of 20,459 people. This is an increase of 22.94% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 42.63% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Punta Gorda had a population of 16,641 people (or 10.4% of the total population of Charlotte County). This makes Punta Gorda the county's most populous community.

The population of Punta Gorda represents 0.09% of the total population of Florida (which has 18,801,310 people), making it the state's 119th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 16,641 people, the population of Punta Gorda increased 16.01% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 14,344 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Punta Gorda was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Punta Gorda post office opened in 1888.
