Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Marathon had an population of 8,540 people. This is an increase of 2.93% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 16.72% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Marathon had a population of 8,297 people (which is 11.35% of the total population of Monroe County). This makes Marathon the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Marathon represents 0.04% of the total population of Florida (which has 18,801,310 people), making it the state's 173rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 8,297 people, the population of Marathon decreased 19.09% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 10,255 people).

We originally found mention of Marathon in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Marathon was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Marathon post office opened in 1909.

We also found Marathon on a map titled Shell Oil Road Map for Florida (1956).
