Welcome to Acton ...

So far, we found very little information about Acton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Acton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Acton, please Contact Us.

Acton would have been located within present day Polk County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Acton, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1884.

The origin (or the toponymy) of Acton: Named after Sir John Dalberg-Acton (1834-1902). He is usually referred to as Lord Acton and is credited for the quote: 'Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely'.

Time Zone: The area where Acton was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Acton still existed, it would have been in the (863) area code.

Adding Acton to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Acton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Acton post office opened in 1884.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Acton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Florida's counties, including Polk, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
