Elbert County was founded February 2, 1874 and was created by taking area from Douglas County. From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Elbert had a population of 26,707 people. This is an increase of 15.68% since the last Census (which gave a population of 23,086 people in 2010). At the time of the 2010 Census, Elbert represented 0.46% of the total population of Colorado.
