The Commemorative Quarter for California

Welcome to Liberty ...

So far, we found very little information about Liberty. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Liberty to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Liberty - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Liberty, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Liberty , we believe that it would have been located within present day San Joaquin County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Liberty, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1860.

Time Zone: The area where Liberty was located is in the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Liberty still existed, it would have been in the (209) area code.

Communities Also Named Liberty ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two California communities named Liberty: This one is located in San Joaquin County and the other is located in Sonoma County.

Beyond California, there are 127 communities that are also named Liberty - they are located in Alabama (7), Arizona, Arkansas (5), Colorado (4), Delaware, Florida (2), Georgia (2), Idaho (2), Illinois (4), Indiana, Iowa, Kansas (4), Kentucky (7), Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan (2), Mississippi (5), Missouri (3), Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico (3), New York, North Carolina (4), Ohio (5), Oklahoma (6), Oregon (3), Pennsylvania (4), Rhode Island, Saskatchewan, South Carolina, Tennessee (17), Texas (10), Utah (2), Virginia (6), Washington (2), West Virginia (2) and Wisconsin (2).

Adding Liberty to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Liberty was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Liberty post office opened in 1860.

We also found Liberty in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Liberty, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of California's counties, including San Joaquin, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
