Roane County was founded in 1856. Roane was created by taking area from Gilmer, Jackson, Kanawha and Wirt Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Roane had a population of 13,688 people. This is a decrease of 8.1% since the last Census (which gave a population of 14,895 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Roane represented 0.8% of the total population of West Virginia.
