Lincoln County was founded in 1867. Lincoln was created by taking area from Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Logan Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Lincoln had a population of 20,409 people. This is a decrease of 5.83% since the last Census (which gave a population of 21,673 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Lincoln represented 1.17% of the total population of West Virginia.
