Clay County was founded in 1858. Clay was created by taking area from Braxton and  Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clay had a population of 8,508 people. This is a decrease of 9.23% since the last Census (which gave a population of 9,373 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clay represented 0.51% of the total population of West Virginia.
