Calhoun County was founded in 1856 and was created by taking area from GilmerCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Calhoun had a population of 7,118 people. This is a decrease of 6.12% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,582 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Calhoun represented 0.42% of the total population of West Virginia, making it the state's 50th most populous county (out of 55 counties).
