Introduction ...

Below is our collection of tidbits, odds 'n ends for West Point.

This page contains three sections:

How Far From West Point to ...

We spend a lot of time looking through Gazetteers, Almanacs & Directories that were published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many of the Gazetteers include the distance from a community such as West Point to various places of note, such as the White House.

With a nod to our favorite Gazetteers, the straight-line distance<1> beginning in West Point to:

  • Portage [Map], which is the Seat of Columbia County, lies 17 miles [27.4 km] to the North Northeast. If you could walk a straight line from West Point to Portage, with an average speed<2> of 2.2 miles [3.5 km] per hour, it would take most of a day to make the trip. A horse and buggy averaging 3.2 miles [5.1 km] per hour would take five to six hours.
  • Madison [Map], which is the State Capital of Wisconsin, lies 21 miles [33.8 km] to the Southeast (SE). The buggy would take most of a day and walking would take just over a day.
  • The White House (Washington, DC [Map]) is 722 miles [1,161.9 km] to the East Southeast (ESE). Driving, with an average speed of 63 miles [101.4 km] per hour, would take just about two full days, a buggy would take 29 days and walking would take 41 days.
  • The shortest distance<3> to Jerusalem (specifically the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock [Map]) is 6,184 miles [9,952.2 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<4>
  • The distance to the Great Mosque of Mecca (specifically the Ka'bah - or Kaaba [Map]) is 6,930 miles [11,152.8 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<5>
  • The distance to Saint Peter's Basilica (The Vatican [Map]) is 4,821 miles [7,758.6 km] and it lies to the Northeast (NE).<6>

Footnotes ...

<1>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'straight-line' distance beginning in West Point. A straight line distance ignores obstructions like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line drawn from Point A (ie- West Point) to Point B.

If you need the driving distance (or directions), we recommend that you use one of the Mapping Services listed on our Map Page for West Point. Since we usually use Google Maps, we've provided the following link: Google Map and Driving Directions starting from Town of West Point

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in West Point. The point that we are using is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 43.3261, Longitude: -89.6457     [Map].   In this case, the coordinates for West Point have been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

<2>While we have tried to pick reasonable speeds, the rate of travel is very theoretical - obstacles like fences, hills, lakes, river crossings and rest stops have been ignored. When we say 'Days' of travel, we're assuming 8 hours of travel per day.

<3>The shortest line can be visualized by stretching a string on a Globe from Point A to Point B - this is known as a Great Circle Route. Where you might expect the shortest route from West Point to the Middle East to be East and South, the Great Circle Route actually lies to the North and East.

<7>The Find-a-Grave website is an excellent research tool with information about a cemetery's location and interments. They also offer a forum for their members which can provide additional help. More information about Find-a-Grave can be found on their website: findagrave.com.
