The community of Port Townsend is the Seat for Jefferson County.

Jefferson County was founded in 1852 and was created by taking area from ThurstonCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Jefferson had a population of 29,676 people. This is an increase of 14.35% since the last Census (which gave a population of 25,953 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Jefferson represented 0.44% of the total population of Washington, making it the state's 27th most populous county (out of 39 counties).
