Wharton County was founded in 1846. Wharton was created by taking area from Jackson and  Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Wharton had a population of 41,556 people. This is an increase of 0.67% since the last Census (which gave a population of 41,281 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Wharton represented 0.16% of the total population of Texas.
