Bandera County was founded in 1856. Bandera was created by taking area from Bexar and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Bandera had a population of 20,560 people. This is an increase of 16.52% since the last Census (which gave a population of 17,645 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Bandera represented 0.08% of the total population of Texas, making it the state's 127th most populous county (out of 254 counties).
