Brown County was founded in 1879 and was created by taking area from Beadle County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Brown had a population of 38,839 people. This is an increase of 5.96% since the last Census (which gave a population of 36,653 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Brown represented 4.5% of the total population of South Dakota.
