The community of Martin is the Seat for Bennett County.

Bennett County was founded in 1909. Bennett was created by taking area from , Oglala Lakota, Washabaugh and Washington Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Bennett had a population of 3,364 people. This is a decrease of 1.95% since the last Census (which gave a population of 3,431 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Bennett represented 0.42% of the total population of South Dakota.
