Calhoun County was founded in 1908. Calhoun was created by taking area from Lexington and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Calhoun had a population of 14,621 people. This is a decrease of 3.71% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,185 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Calhoun represented 0.38% of the total population of South Carolina, making it the state's 44th most populous county (out of 46 counties).
