Lake County was founded in 1874. Lake was created by taking area from Jackson and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Lake had a population of 7,089 people. This is a decrease of 4.49% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,422 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Lake represented 0.22% of the total population of Oregon, making it the state's 32nd most populous county (out of 36 counties).
