Ottawa County was founded March 6, 1840. Ottawa was created by taking area from Erie, Sandusky and Lucas Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Ottawa had a population of 40,532 people. This is a decrease of 2.16% since the last Census (which gave a population of 41,428 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Ottawa represented 0.36% of the total population of Ohio.
